While some might consider Bobbin to be introverted, she truly does love her community. In fact, she doesn’t consider herself an introvert at all. Instead, her work simply requires that she be indoors for many hours each day working a loom to make textiles for her village. While she is capable of making all kinds of garments and coverings, her passions lie with making tapestry-like blankets for the dead called “Death Blankets”.
These blankets are often customized to reflect the story of the deceased, as requested by the surviving family members. Almost always with a base of black or deep blue, meanings and symbolism are depicted by pictographs in a style unique to Black Ice Demons. Much like hieroglyphs, the direction the image is facing and what surrounds it dictates the meaning, so one must understand the context of the entire piece to truly comprehend its significance. Regardless of whether or not you can read these stories, everyone can appreciate the sheer artistry and devotion that goes into creating even a single segment of one of these blankets.
Besides being pretty and having sentimental value, these blankets have another purpose: they are to be used as a shroud for the bodies of those that have passed on. With a bit of extra care, frigid temperatures and magic, it is possible for bodies to be preserved while they are waiting for these blankets to be finalized. They are draped over the body to protect them against angry ghosts or vengeful spirits jealous of the living that might attempt to keep someone from moving on. Whether or not these blankets actually do what they are designed to is uncertain, but Bobbin certainly believes they do, as do many Black Ice Demons. This particular art form dates back to some of their earliest settlements, and it is a skill that is passed down through certain bloodlines only (usually that of past priests or priestesses). As those who have been taught this skill do their work with a loom, they are also weaving in enchantments the whole time to serve as protection or wards against ghosts.
Bobbin, however, wasn’t born to a family who passed down these techniques and instead was adopted into one. Normally, adopted children wouldn’t be permitted to learn, but with no one else in the village to carry on this important practice beyond her mother, the community made an exception. As an adult, Bobbin is glad that they did as it is, perhaps, the most rewarding way she feels she can give back to her community.
While she typically uses her skills with a loom to aid people, this death worker also knows a thing or two about baneful magic and can weave curses into objects as much as she can weave charms or enchantments into the fabric of a garment. In companionship, she can offer her skills in these four areas: baneful work, death work, charms and enchantments. She doesn’t know entirely what she’s “supposed to want” out of companionship as she feels quite content in life, but Bobbin is leaving her heart open to whatever opportunities come her way. This, she feels, is the best way to approach it in order to find someone who clicks with her more fully.
