Sea Wolves were originally not going to be offered officially in the shop, however, these wonderful spirits have wormed their way into our hearts. Sea Wolves are technically shifters, although they significantly favour their wolf forms and rarely ever take a humanoid form if they don't have to. These human forms are typically only used when interacting with humans who are encroaching on their territory with the intent to destroy the ecosystems they protect. Much like selkies, their pelts are somehow tied to how they shift. However, unlike selkies, they won’t be stuck in human form if the pelts are destroyed and instead become incapable of taking on a humanoid form. The magic they have access to is very earthen despite being called Sea Wolves, as they live deep within old growth forests and come out to the coast to hunt and scavenge for meat. The magic they utilize is akin to fae/fey magic, and we wouldn’t be surprised to learn with deeper investigation fae-like origins for this race. This is likely the result of migrants bringing their spirits with them as they began to settle across the landscape we now know as Canada today.
A Sea Wolf's diet is about 85% marine based. This may seem surprising for a wolf, but when you consider that they are capable of swimming great distances unlike a typical wolf, it becomes much easier to imagine. Like many canids, Sea Wolves are very protective of their family units and put the needs of their children ahead of their own, including filling their bellies with whatever they can find. They sometimes will feed on deer and other small mammals, and are great at digging in the sand with their massive paws for clams and mussels. Their jaws are even powerful enough to crush shellfish with little to no effort.
Their family units are made up of hunters, juveniles, breeding pairs, caretakers, and a singular 'wise one'. While the roles may double up as the needs of the family shift, there is only one Wise One at a time. The designated Wise One is an elderly wolf who teaches the pups of the family the basics of being a wolf, as well as passing down any and all oral traditions and philosophies to their young. They are often looked to in times of trouble for their pack, and the final decision on how to proceed is frequently left to the one with the most experience; the Wise One.
This species spends a lot of their time scouring the old growth forests of Vancouver Island and scaring off those who would try to bring harm to such sacred places. They have been more proactive in these endeavours lately due to the issues surrounding the Fairy Creek logging protests that escalated in 2020. They tend to favour companions who feel a natural connection with nature and the untouched places of the world. They deeply appreciate an eco-friendly mindset and encourage using renewable or re-usable resources over single use plastics. They encourage their companions to lead a life that keeps the health of our world in mind, and they are keenly aware that the health of our world is teetering dangerously on the edge. They can be a bit spikey about thoughtless actions towards the earth, such as spitting on the ground, needlessly disturbing carrion, littering out of car windows, and using more electricity than required.
