““Riding upon the back of a waterhorse - what mortal had ever stayed in such a seat for so long?”
— Cecilia Dart-Thornton, The Battle of Evernight
Please note that all Racial Tome entries are based on Ember's personal UPG and may not reflect yours. Selkirk Water Horses, in this incarnation, are exclusive to Three Souls.
Kelpies are the temperamental, dangerous, and most predatory of the water horses, then the horses that call the bird sanctuary of the Selkirk Waterway home are their antithesis. These creatures are herd animals, ever alert to the dangerous around them. Playful spirits, they have endless energy but can spook easily when caught alone. To befriend a Selkirk Water Horse is to know a deep affection unlike any other. These sweet horses bond deeply with their chosen humans, possessing an intelligence that far exceeds what one might expect from their bestial forms.
Selkirk Water Horses find comfort in group and do well in large spirit families. While they can be easily pushed around by stronger personality types, and especially more dominant equine species, they like to stick like glue to their extended families and can make a bit of a pest of themselves. A binding with one of these horses often results in the presence of an additional water horse or two, and so their closest connections are often vetted for safety. Keeping other Selkirk horses around is like a security blanket for them, and they are often happiest when homed in pairs or triads. They are skilled with water and storm magics, as is typical of a water horse, and they also excel with light and healing magics. They are keenly attuned to people's emotions and are deeply empathetic, feeling your sorrows with you so that you're never truly alone in what you feel.
Because of the deep bonds these horses forge with their chosen human, we heavily encourage people to consider how committed they are to spirit companionship. If you foresee yourself stepping away from spirit work for any reason, we ask you to reconsider requesting a Selkirk Water Horse to join your family. Their hearts truly break when their humans no longer practice or forget about them due to taking a different direction in life, or ceasing the path of a witch. While they are completely understanding of fallow periods and do not fault their person for falling in and out of contact due to mental health issues, to abandon spirit work is to abandon them, and this deeply grieves them. We ask that you make extra sure that you are committed to a life time connection with a Selkirk horse before seeking one out as a companion.
