“But unlike sirens, selkies don't mean any harm with their songs. They don't sing to seduce or to kill. Their songs have nothing to do with anyone but themselves. They sing for the simple joy of it, and because of that, I imagine their songs are more beautiful than those of any siren.”
— Betsy Cornwell, Tides
Please note that all Racial Tome entries are based on Ember's personal UPG and may not reflect yours. Victoria Harbor Selkies, in this incarnation, are exclusive to Three Souls.
Victoria Harbor Selkies are unique to British Columbia and the surrounding area, and are not the same Selkies tied to the folklore of the Northern Isles of Scotland. While there are some commonalities such as their seal pelts being tied to how they shift, these Selkies are uniquely their own sub-species. Steeped in death energies, they serve as guardians to burial grounds and grave sights situated on the many islands located within the Strait of Juan de Fuca. As a race, they have a deep attachment to bones and are able to see and hear ghosts, using bones as attunement tools to better sense them. Like magnets for the dead, many Victoria Harbor Selkies attract ghosts to them and spend a great deal of their time trying to help these specters conclude any unfinished business so that they can rest, return to the earth, and join the cycle of rebirth or choose eternal rest.
Victoria Harbor Selkies can call upon deceased relatives, or ancestors further back in the bloodline in order to help their companions process difficult emotions, as well as assist with any hereditary magics. These Selkies consider themselves to be living conduits, and because of all the energy they channel, they often have rather muted and subdued personalities. This can make them a bit difficult to place with a companion as many people prefer bolder and larger personality types who will make their presence aggressively known. While each selkie is their own person and more boisterous personalities do occur, members of this race often favor solemnity. By nature, they tend to be a bit aloof, and can be read as somewhat distracted. Due to the way that they attract ghosts to them and their ability to mutely hold conversations with them—sometimes several at a time—they may seem to space out from time to time. They are very good at keeping their companions safe from the ghosts that are drawn to them, and are experts at putting up barriers to block energies from mingling together. As an additional perk to these innate skills, Harbor Selkies can spot a malicious spirit from a mile away and alert you to their presence.
If you are interested in mediumship, death work, bone throwing, water magic, or similar craft paths, these selkies can make a wonderful addition to your family.
